Layover Lifesavers: Logan Airport Guide

July 02, 2008

With this month's Savvy theme being Escapes, it seems reasonable to begin with a tour of Boston's biggest central airport, Logan.  Though traveling with small kids is not necessarily the most fun part of any trip, if you arm yourself with these tips, I sure hope it can be bearable.

The most fun way to entertain your children while visiting Logan is to take a trip to the Kidport.  This in-airport playspace, first built in 1987 and sponsored by Boston Children's Museum, was the nation's first on-airport play area for children and is perfect for families waiting for flights or who fall victim to a layover.  Complete with rocking chairs for nursing moms and tired dads, your children can check out the kid-geared exhibit on airline travel and complete the experience on the airplane slide and baggage claim slide.  An Airplane Climbing Sculpture, Logan Control Tower Climbing Structure, Infant and Toddler Play Area, "What's Outside?" Window Display, and Magnetic Poetry Wall will keep kids entertained for hours.  Point is, this area provides educational play for kids and stress relief for parents at a critical point in your travel WAITING.  Located in the Terminal C departure area, the Kidport also offers two kid-friendly dining options - Angelina's Panini Bar serves hot pressed sandwiches as well as fresh salads and Famous Famiglia offers pizza.

There is also a second version of Kidport, located in the Satellite Building, by Gate A18.  Designed by Playtime, this playspace features a replica of Logan's Control Tower and a wall replica of Terminal A.

Things to remember when traveling with children:

  • Pack a snack and beverage or buy a ready-made "Meals to Fly" in the airport. Your child may not be on the same food schedule as the airline.  (Do airlines even serve food anymore)
  • Bring along a few of your child's favorite small quiet toys as well as a few new things for comfort.
  • Bring crayons and paper in your carry-on bag.
  • Bring a portable DVD player complete with favorite movies.  DON'T TAKE IT OUT UNTIL YOU NEED TO!!
  • Stay relaxed.  If you're wound up, you're kids will be too.  Not fun for the traveler sitting next to you.

Have a great trip!!
